One of the books I’ve recently read, or better said listened to (I rarely listen to podcasts / audio book, they’re just not my preferred format) is Stop Playing Safe by Margie Warrell, as one of books recommended in our work monthly Book Club.

And most of what the author shares is common sense — things you already know if you just think about it, but you never do. So here are some of the key ideas / quotes from the book that stuck with me and I would like to share with you today:

  • Don’t let your desire to be the best prevent you from doing the best you can with your natural talent.
  • The way you view your work — as a job, career or calling, it impacts your fulfillment and success. You can create meaning from any type of work simply by how you approach what you do now.
  • Finding your purpose in life stands at the intersection of talent, passions, skills, expertise and values.
  • True courage is not the absence of fear or doubt about your ability to see or endeavor through successful completion, it’s action you take in the presence of fear.
  • When you fail to do what you said you will do, it will cause lack of trust, so don’t commit if you can’t deliver.
  • If everybody is thinking alike, than somebody isn’t thinking.
  • Self promotion is not conceited, is crucial. The saying “it’s not what you know, but who you know” simply isn’t true. It’s not what you know and it’s not who you know. it’s who knows what you know (what you can do and what you want to do).
  • As more women stop playing safe and start owning their power, more organizations will benefit from the unique value, perspectives and leadership styles that women bring to the table.

I’m sure there are many more learning we can take from the book and I would be happy to hear yours, if you read it.
